Fans have been impatiently anticipating news and updates on the confirmed second season since HBO’s The Last of Us season finale aired less than two months ago (we know, it feels like an eternity ago). Wildly speculating who could be cast as main protagonist Abby, and when we can expect to continue Joel and Ellie’s adventure. It seems like we finally have some answers…
Showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin were asked when production for the second season will begin during a panel discussion at the Deadline FYC+ HBO Max event. To which Druckmann replied, “Months, not years away.” It’s worth noting that this does not imply that filming will begin this year, though it’s not completely out of the question.
In an interview with The Jonathan Ross Show last month, show lead Bella Ramsey hinted at a possible shooting date, noting that she expects filming to begin around the end of this year and continue into the new year:
“I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. So (the season) it’ll probably be (released by) the end of 2024, early 2025.”

Craig Mazin was also asked if he wanted to reveal details about a timeframe between the first and second season, which he seemed hesitant to respond to :
“We could, but we’re not gonna. It’s fun to keep the mystery, to wonder.“

He did mention that the process of adapting from the game to the television format would be the same as it was for the first season, which should be a sign that we won’t wander too far from the original material.
